Mrs Barrow, a large, red-faced woman with shiny cheeks, offered them buns fresh from the oven and a mug of sweet tea. Although Ariella and Yosef were hungry, they politely said “No, thank you,” to the buns in case they contained lard. They weren’t allowed to eat lard because it was made from pork fat, which wasn’t kosher.

“I’m making Miss Conway a soup,” Mrs Barrow said, pointing to the wooden tub on the floor. “To get her strength up.”

Ariella had thought the scraps were to be thrown away. She grimaced at Yosef and then asked Elsie, “Could we meet Miss Conway? It’s important.”

Elsie snorted. “Definitely not.”

Ariella had to think quickly. “If we don’t, she might die, and then you’d lose your job and wouldn’t be able to stay here.”

Elsie frowned. “Alright. You’ll need to be quick before the doctor gets here. Follow me.”
